Maine's moose hunting season was established in 1980 as a management tool for the state to control the quickly growing moose population. It was also established to help decrease the increasing moose/vehicular collision problem. In the years since, the split hunting season has become a huge part of the local culture and provided both resident and non-resident big game hunters with some truly remarkable trophy opportunities.
A permit to hunt moose must be won thru a state lottery draw operated by the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department. The state is divided into designated “Wildlife Management Districts” commonly referred to as WMD’s. Lottery applicants must list their choice of hunting districts when applying for chances in the draw.
