Maine accounts for 18% of the United States domestic salmon market. Maine's salmon industry provided close to 1000 jobs since 1996. The majority of these jobs are in Washington County.
In 1996 Maine's salmon industry accounted for "$30 million of personal income and $44 million of goods and services produced in Maine. In 1998, the Maine salmon industry had an estimated economic value of $60 million. For comparison, the Maine dairy and potato industries each had an estimated economic value of $90 million in 1998."
The Landlocked Salmon is a subspecies of the Atlantic salmon They live in the lakes of the northern United States without ever descending to sea. The largest landlocked salmon recorded to date had a weight of about 35 lbs. Spring is the easiest time of year to catch a landlocked salmon.
