make blueberry harvesting simpler and more economical

If you’ve ever tried to handpick a basket of blueberries on your own, you know how time-consuming berry harvesting can be without a harvesting implement. One entrepreneur in Maine was able to take a lifetime of skills and develop a widely used harvesting rake to make blueberry harvesting simpler and more economical.

Harold L. Hubbard is better known by the name “Ike.” A small business owner in Jonesport, Maine, he and his wife currently live on a legacy homestead in Mason’s Bay, where Hubbard grew up hunting and picking blueberries to help his aunt and uncle during the summers. Today, he has transformed his experience with blueberry harvests and background knowledge from the University of South Maine into a thriving harvesting business.

Local growers in the area asked Hubbard to develop a blueberry rake “that would not break!” for their annual harvesting. As an individual who was constantly developing solutions for use in his work and around the home, Hubbard developed a rake and opened his business in 1990. The Hubbard Rake Company now specializes in aluminum rakes that are balanced and user friendly.

Successful small businesses often arise from situations like Hubbard’s. The community had a need, he had a skillset, and that combination led to the birth of a thriving small business that has served the berry harvesting industry and special order needs for 18 years. The shop now specializes in rakes for all types of berry harvests as well as custom designs and welding work.

If you’re interested in learning more about The Hubbard Rake Co. or purchasing rakes of your own, the Hubbard’s welcome visitors to their shop throughout the year. Located near Jonesboro on Mason Bay Road, the store is open from 8-5 on weekdays. Interested customers can also learn more about rake technique and make purchases through the website.
